Witness testimonies emerged of several detonations and the noise of low-altitude jets in the Venezuelan capital in the early hours of the weekend. The situation has prompted allegations from the Venezuelan leadership and demands for international scrutiny.

Venezuela Condemns United States of Attack

Venezuela's socialist government has accused the Washington of committing "imperial aggression," claiming that ex- President Trump reportedly ordered attacks against the South American nation. In an official announcement, the authorities confirmed that strikes had impacted Caracas and several other states: Miranda state, La Guaira, and Aragua.

"Our only objective of this attack is to take control of Venezuela's natural resources, in particular its crude oil and resources," the government asserted.

Venezuelan officials urged the world to condemn the actions, which it termed a "blatant breach of international norms" that put millions of lives in peril.

The president of neighboring Colombia, Gustavo Petro, wrote on a social platform that "Currently they are attacking Caracas... bombing it with missiles." He requested an immediate meeting of the UN Security Council.

The Colombian government, which just became a member of the Security Council, stated it would initiate security plans at its border with Venezuela.

Preceding Events

The reported strikes follow a prolonged campaign of pressure by the US against the Venezuelan regime. Beginning in August, there has been a major American military buildup off Venezuela's northern coast and a series of airstrikes on boats suspected of illegal activities.

The administration has announced "a state of emergency" and commanded all national defense measures to be implemented. It has also urged its supporters to take to the streets and "repudiate this external act."

US authorities and the Pentagon have not publicly responded to requests for a statement regarding the reports.
