American flight controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been absent, leading airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays caused by weather and additional factors.

More than 3,000 US flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he expects the circumstances to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," he remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their worries directly.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, can I find an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he continued.

The secretary further mentioned that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest after the shutdown started.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to fly in the United States, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy said.

On that day, some planes were stopped at LAX due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth most active terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel stretching north to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The FAA alert went out at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Many flights were operating normally before noon.

Travel at Newark Airport, though, were delayed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airport in the US, could experience difficulties from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The FAA warned passengers in the state to consult carriers about updated departure times.

The issue comes ahead of Game 3 of the World Series, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to fly in the US.

Strain on American aviation helped end a government shutdown in 2019. At the time, the halt had entered its fifth week and affected flight services, including aviator instruction.

It led several flight controllers to remain absent on the identical date on January 25, 2019, briefly halting movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, Donald Trump, who at the time was in his initial presidency as president, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the government shutdown after 35 days.
