The Former Congresswoman Establishes History as First Female Governor

Over two and a half centuries, Virginia has seen 74 state executives, each one of them men. Recently, Abigail Spanberger shattered this glass ceiling by winning the election as the initial woman to hold the office in Virginia's history.

A Campaign Focused On Cost-of-Living Issues and Strategic Opposition

The former US representative and Central Intelligence Agency case officer triumphed with a election strategy that highlighted everyday expenses and strategically opposed Donald Trump's policies as opposed to the person.

Beginnings and Education

Born in a New Jersey town on a summer day in 1979, she moved to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at age 13. Her dad was an army veteran who later pursued a career in police work; her mother was a healthcare professional and community helper.

She studied at the University of Virginia, obtaining a diploma in literary arts. Upon completing her studies, she worked briefly as a classroom instructor before turning to a career in public service.

“I was raised knowing that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” Spanberger shared with followers at a rally in Norfolk, Virginia last Saturday.

Public Service Career

At the federal agency, she handled involving drugs, abusers and financial criminals. She executed search and arrest warrants, often being the only woman on the operation squad. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and specialized in counter-terrorism cases, serving undercover and internationally.

Life Change

In 2014, she and her husband Adam, an engineer, considered their future. Residing on the Pacific coast, they were considering another foreign posting. They took out a globe and asked their eldest daughter, then in kindergarten, where they should go. the commonwealth, she replied, because “all our loved ones reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger shared at her rally: “And so we decided to pivot from a national duty, to service to community because she was right. All our relatives lives in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in her home state, she joined Moms Demand Action, which works against gun violence, and started a youth group. In that period, she resolved to seek office, which people told her was a “impossible task” because no Democrat had won the congressional seat in decades.

“But I saw what Donald Trump was implementing with his executive power and how he was creating conflict. And I saw my member of Congress repeatedly oppose the healthcare law. And I felt I had to step up. So for the record: I succeeded.”

Moderate Stance

In Washington, she quickly became associated with the centrist group, a collection of moderate and fiscally moderate Democrats. She prioritized lower-profile issues: expanding broadband to rural areas, fighting drug trafficking and veterans’ services.

She earned a reputation for working with Republicans and was frequently recognized as the most bipartisan member of the Virginia delegation. She was outspoken about political rhetoric that she believed alienated centrists, cautioning her party against ideological slogans that could be weaponised in tight races.

The "Mod Squad"

Along with Congresswomen Elissa Slotkin and Mikie Sherrill, she was labeled a member of the “pragmatic group” in opposition to the progressive “group” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Gubernatorial Campaign

In November 2023, she announced she would leave Congress for a another term and would rather run for governor in 2025.

Her campaign highlighted themes of civic duty, advocacy for education and infrastructure and protection of democratic institutions. Her federal service gave her authority on defense issues and she spoke of government work as a vocation rather than a job.

Election Victory

This helped her to overcome rival candidate her challenger's criticisms on social topics, including the assertion that she is an extremist on civil rights and health care for transgender people.

Spanberger, who maintained that communities should decide whether trans youth can compete in school athletics, cast her rival as the candidate more out of step with the mainstream of the commonwealth's citizens.
