The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business alongside his partner, announced how he plans to independently develop this new flavor within a personal collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was barred from speaking out about. Longstanding Conflict Involving Creators versus Parent Company The recent announcement deepens the ongoing tension between the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the British packaged goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades. Both founders have claimed that Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "maintaining its activist principles". Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Support The entrepreneur announced via social media how he is creating a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients. “I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.” The watermelon has become an emblem of support for Palestinians due to its colors, which closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern. Previous Activism and Current Changes In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank. The new dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that was first established in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return". Management Shifts plus Upcoming Plans Mr. Cohen revealed that he will develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever. This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's in September, after decades of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how its independence was undermined following corporate moves to curb its social activism. At that time, Ben Cohen commented how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him." "My heart compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for its independence so that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
