Each time a significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
