đ Share this article We Never Really Told People How to Use Mods: Warframe's New Quest Corrects a Longstanding Issue The popular online game known as Warframe, an experience where you might encounter bizarre cosmic entities and pilot futuristic vehicles, has launched a major update. The Vallis Undermind highlights the distinctive charm that has become synonymous with Warframe in recent years. The new content, made available this week, brings in a fungus-inspired character that performs a unique animation, along with a brand-new biome to discover. But itâs also going back to basics, with a new mission designed to making sure this complicated, expansive 12-year-old MMO is understandable by new players. The Arrival of "The Teacher" Named âThe Teacher,â this is the long-awaited quest that instructs Warframe players on how to use one of the game's most basic â yet most intricate systems: the mod system. In Warframe, modifications are enhancements that can be added to your character or your weapons to improve their stats. They range from the straightforward (boosting power or shortening reload times) to the incredibly intricate. Content creators often produce extensive guides about idealized builds that use powerful mods in combination to create overwhelming power. âI think a lot of people were maybe getting into the early game, seeing mods, not really understanding it,â noted a key developer. âI think it was really important, at the end of the quest, for players to think, âWow, modding is interesting. I want to try more of this.ââ A Collaborative Effort âThe Teacherâ was created through a partnership between the original developers, who handled the story elements, and a supporting studio, who crafted the gameplay, which will be introduced to new players. In the quest, the player is asked to retrieve a new segment for their spaceship, but theyâre confronted by a formidable foe called Teshin, who takes away the playerâs abilities and melee weapons, and compels them to use the mod system to effectively show its potential. Many of the external team were already fans of the game, but others had never played before, according to a principal games designer. It was this outside perspective that proved critical. âOur initial step involved observing new players and go right play through the tutorial and take prodigious notes on everywhere they fell out,â the designer said. Early-game menu pop-ups introduced players to modding. But the team noted that they didnât work on everyone. âCertain players missed fundamental guidance where the game highlights it saying equip the modification,â he said. Filling a Significant Gap Warframeâs mods allow players to create incredibly strong combinations that fill the display with damage values. But "The Teacher" isnât really about that. There will be some long-time players who desire more advanced content, like optimizing for endgame challenges. But it became clear that the mission addresses a genuine oversight for early players â and that doing so isnât as simple as it looks. âNumerous subtle adjustments and little subtle things in the background there to just demonstrate the possibilities rather than explain it outright,â the designer said. For example, one of the mission's objectives is to show how mods can create powerful elemental status effects; in this case, Magnetic damage that eats chunks out of enemy shields. âAdjustments to the armament to be a rapid-fire gun, because it shows off the proc rate more,â the designer said. âBut you donât want to explicitly tell players, 'with a basic modification, you only got a low probability to proc an elemental effect.' So how do you tutorialize that without changing it?â Veterans will instinctively look for that kind of weapon effect and understand how it works, but beginners require instruction to pay attention to these things. âItâs not a kind of game development that we've had to worry about as much just because our priorities lay elsewhere,â said a narrative lead. âHowever, this oversight meant that we never really told people how to use mods.â Months of Effort âA tremendous amount of work is required for just making a seemingly straightforward quest that â frankly â you can complete quickly,â said the designer. âBut it's months and months of work for loads of people.â The designer was clearly enthusiastic over being able to work on a game that he loves â and to craft a mission for one of his favorite characters. âI love Teshin,â he said. âHe's my 8-year-old internal self's idea of what's cool.â Improving the New Player Experience In the 12 years since its release, Warframe has been in a consistent battle with its own new user introduction. There are lots of complex systems that players donât need to worry about â and won't encounter until hours into the game. And others, like modding, that scale in complexity depending on how much time you want to invest. A previous patch streamlined the early game so that players could reach Warframeâs mind-bending plot developments with less time on the grind up front. With âThe Teacher,â itâs clear that the developers are doubling down on a commitment to make sure Warframeâs early game experience doesnât stay locked in 2013. New players can get their foot in the door â even if they miss the menu prompts.
